Which Hawaii airline is safer – Island Air or Go Airlines?

June 4th, 2010

I’m planning to fly between the islands in November. I like Hawaiian Airlines, but they don’t fly to Lanai. How are the airlines Go and Island Air when it comes to their safety record? I know that Go Airlines had trouble recently because both their pilots fell asleep during a flight to Hilo, which doesn’t sound good at all. And Island Air has small propeller planes, which look scary to someone who is a bit afraid of flying. Does anyone have any experiences with either of these airlines? Which planes are safer?

I am not familiar with Go Airlines, but I recently looked up Island Air before booking an interisland flight (ultimately on another carrier), and they had an excellent safety record. Also, I am told that propeller planes are just as safe as jet planes, when being flown by commercial airlines– that is, it’s the type of people who fly prop planes, not the plane itself, that leads to more accidents.

Both planes are about the same. Both companies operate prop planes depending on your destination.

Island Air has been around for years while Go! just arrived here a few years ago and already has 1 strike against them with locals when their pilots fell asleep.

Up to you which company you fly with, it’s a personal choice.

If I had to choose, I’d go with Island Air only because they’ve been around.

Both companies fly out of the same terminal.

    Good luck!
