My boyfriend wants to go on vacation with me. Since I’m unemployed at the moment, should he pay for the trip?

September 17th, 2010

My boyfriend want to go on vacation with me. I’m currently unemployed, I’ve been laid off for about a year now. We have been looking into some vacation packages and the one he favors the most will cost us proximately over $2,000 each round trip. I’ve gone on vacations with my exes before and they’ve all paid for my trips. My boyfriend and I have been dating for about a year now. I’m giving him hints that I can’t be spending too much and that I’m on a budget since I have no other income. All my friends think he should pay for my trip because their boyfriends have paid for theirs. I’m on a budget and the most I’ll probably spend is $1000. if I have to pay for myself. Right now, I have no idea what kind of arrangement it will be. He’s trying to have me look into the places we want to go and book the trip. I think he wants me to do that because he wants me to pay for my own and so that he can just give me his share of the fare. Do you think it’s fair for him to choose a destination so expensive without even considering the situation that I am in? We are going away for 6 days to Bora Bora, it’s our first trip together. It’s very expensive and I’m reluctant to spend my savings without a job. Like I said, my former boyfriends have never asked me to pay for my trips. Should I ask him what exactly he’s going to pay for or just wait until he collects my money?

And lets just say, that I had to pay for air fare, shouldn’t he pay for the hotel? What about food and tour packages, am I suppose to pay for that as well? Remember, I’m unemployed and I’m sure, he’ll want to sign up for all sorts of tours which I will not be able to afford. What should I do? How do I bring up the subject without sounding like a cheapskate?

    He should pay.

I’m an unemployed person and I still like to pay for things for my girlfriend. Mind you, under normal circumstances he shouldn’t have to pay for your whole trip. But this situation definitely calls for it.

Why don’t you just talk it over with him? You would have to be cautious and considerate with what you say, because money is one of the major initiators of couples fighting. It does need to be brought up though, beat around the bush no longer – just ask him flat-out and get his thoughts.

If he expects you to pay when you’re unemployed; he’s the cheapskate. Especially if he is the one insisting on the trip. It wouldn’t be totally out of line for him to expect you to pay for some of the food, but most everything else he should pay for. You could always reschedule the trip under the excuse that you have to find a job or something? I didn’t really read the whole middle part of your question so…yahh I might be off a little but it sounds like he is the cheapskate in this situation.

yeah he has to pay… BTW where is Bora Bora?

He shouldn’t have to pay for your share. You should be going halves, there’s no reason why he should have to.
Having said that, you need to be honest and upfront with him. Tell him you cannot afford this holiday rather than wasting time looking up destinations and packages.
